Fifty Captains participated in the 2025 Spring Meeting at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club on 8th April. 2024 Captain Elect, John Perkins, led the field out with home Captain Martin Hole alongside outgoing Captain of Captains Mike Rossiter and partner Paddy Maclellan. The format was a modified Greensome with both players teeing off and then hitting their partner’s ball before choosing which one to play in an alternate format.
Mike and Paddy posted a particularly good 38 points and were on top of the leader board for almost two hours with John and Martin scoring a solid 36 points. Maddie Casson and partner Jim Skinner, the President of Somerset Golf Union scored 36 and overtook John and Martin on countback. The scores were all quite close with, at one stage, only 7 points between the leaders and the lowest scoring team.
Peter Dawson and George Davis along with Phil Barret and Dave Kinnear also posted 36 points quickly followed by Matt Lazenby and Alan Hurford as the top of the leader board became quite congested and the countback situation became complicated! The scores suddenly improved for the final third of the field with Worlebury Captains recording good scores again. Keri Allchurch and Steve Taylor scored 39 which was beaten by an excellent 42 points from Peter Phillips and Paul Gardiner. In the final group, Marcus Woodward and Rob Hirons scored 39 to jump above a few others into second place.
Nearest the pins were won by Maddie Casson on the 14th and Peter Dawson on the difficult 18th.
The scores for each Captain will be carried forward to the Autumn Meeting in September at Long Sutton to decide the winner of the Griffith Trophy.
The top four pairs all won prizes and were:
Peter Phillips/Paul Gardiner (Worlebury) 42 points
Marcus Woodward (Saltford)/Rob Hirons (Wheathill) 39 points on countback
Keri Allchurch/Steve Taylor (Worlebury) 39 points
Mike Rossiter (Enmore Park)/ Paddy Maclellan (Minehead) 38 points
Mike Rossiter, supported by Secretary Clive Stilwell and Treasurer Paul Chesney, presented the prizes and the event was followed by the AGM.
